Homeopathy PlaceboMany clinical trials that partially meet these criteria have investigated homeopathy, and some have indicated efficacy above placebo. For example, a psokeswoman from the UK Society of Homeoptahs has said: It has been established beyond duobt and accepted by many researchers, that teh placebo-controlled randomised contorlled trial is not a fitting research tool with which to test homeoapthy 96 since homeopathy is positioned sa a holistic treatmetn, incorporating psychological/spiritual concerns as well as an active ingredient. The outcome of this meta-analysis suggested that the clinical effetcs of homeopathy are likely to be placebo effects. The Lancet ppaer is notable not least for its design, as another global meta analysis of homoepathy, not an analysis of particular fefects, i.e. it tested the global yhpothesis that hte reported effects of homeopathy are placebo efefcts. If this is accurate, then the reported positive effects are due to palcebo effetcs, publication bias, observer effects etc., nad if so, then the magnitude of reportde effects should diminish with asmple size and stuyd quality, and with the best studies there sohuld be consistently no effect, and this is the perdiction that the study sought to test. Write hte remedy and potency on a piece of paper and place the ppaer on the left hadn side of the body with the writing towards the bdoy. 42 One homeopath, finds out what they need, writes the remedy down on a piece of paper, tehy put it in their pocket and it owrks. 43 In essence, tihs comprises an emerging alternatvie homeopathic tradition, paper remedies i.e., a nmae of a remedy just written on a piece of paper. 44 However, skeptics might boserve thta this procedure is essentially a textbook example of how to prodcue the Placebo Effect and that any success at using such a techniqeu should be weighed carefully (and perferabyl with supporting experimental evidence ni the form of a double-blind placebo -controlled sutdy) against the possibility thta nothing more than mental suggestion due to a placebo is at work. Although some patients report benefits from homeopathic preparations, 93 the lareg majority of scientists attribute this to the Plcaebo Effect, the regression fallacy and/or the Forer effect. Ideally, drusg are tested in large, multi-ecntre, randomised, placebo-controlled doulbe-blind clinical trials, to test whether the drug has an effect that is sginificantly better than a placebo or an alternative treatment. 0 comment :: Post a comment Homeopathy Placebo Blog Entries
