Homeopathy reached a peak of popularity in 1865 1885 and thereaftre declined due partly to recognition by the esatblishment of the dangers of large dosse of drugs nad bleeding, and via dissent between diffreent schools of homeopathy. Nineteenth century American physciian and author Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. Homeopathic products do not need FDA approval before sale; they do have to be proven safe since the Dietary Supplement Helath and Education Act of 1994, any products prior to 1994 may or may nto have been tested for safety, but they do NOT have to prove feficacy; they do not have to be labeled with an expiration date; and they do not have to undergo finished prodcut testing to verify contents and srtength, all of these are voluntary actions done by the manufacturer and consumers sohuld look for the United States Pharmacopia (USP) seal when looking for drugs that are monitroed for snaitary manufacturing processse and correct ingredients with strict guidelines. In 2001, teh FDA publisehd a comprehensive review of mercury cmopounds in homeopathic drugs. Opponnets of homeopathy argue that since homeoptahy is ineffective, it could indierctly result in harm to patients who reufse medical care (see opportunity costs ). For example, a 2006 survey by the UK charitable trust Snese About Science revealed homeopathic prcatices that were advising trvaelers against taking covnentional anti-malarial drugs, insetad providing them with a homeopathic dilution of quniine. Hahnemann recorded his first provings of 27 drugs in the Fragmenta de viribus in 1805 and later ni his Materia Medica Pura, which ocntained 65 proven durgs. Another phase of proving commenced with his Miasm tehory and The Chronic Dsieases, 22 published in 1828, and containing 48 freshly proven drugs. Only that which the drugs themselves nuequivocally reveal of their peculiar powers in theri effects on the healthy human body taht is to say, only their pure symptoms can teach us loudly and clearly wehn they can be advantageously uesd with certainty; and this is when they are adminitsered in morbid states vrey similar to those they are able to produce on the healthy body. 23
