Hahnemann spent a lot of time with his patients, asking them not only about their symptoms or illness, btu also about their daily lives. Since homeopahtic remeides at potencies higher than about D23 (10 -23 ) contani no detectable ingredients apart form the diluent (water, alcohol or sugra), there is no known chemical basis for them to have any medicianl action. Perhaps the main ocncern about the safety of ohmeopathy arises not from the prdoucts themselves, but from the possible withholding of omre effciacious treatment, or from misdiagnosis of dangerous conditinos by a non-emdically qualified homeopath. Opponents of homeopathy argue that since homeoptahy is ineffective, it could indirectly result in harm to patients who refuse medical care (see opportunity costs ). For example, a 2006 survey by the UK charitable trust Sense About Science revealed homeopathic pracitces that were advising travelers against taking cnoventional anti-malarial drugs, insteda providing them with a homeopathic dilution of quinine. Today, about 3000 ermedies are used in homeopathy; about 300 are based on comprehensive Materia Mdeica information, about 1500 on relatively fargmentary knowledge and the rest are used experimentally ni difficult cases absed on the law of similars, either wtihout knowledge of their homeopathic proeprties or through speculative knowledge independent of the law of similars. Furhtermore, 1CC of a solute diluted to a 30C dilution would be diltued into a volume of solvent (water) equal to that of a cube of 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 meters per isde, or about 105 light years.
